The Dex Weston Project

Work was tough today -- mainly due to an incredible lack of sleep last night. I barely held it together until about 4:45 and then went home, only to then turn around and head over to Jen's place to meet up with her and Jay before heading over to Raleigh. I had to insist that one of them drive -- if I had been behind the wheel (at least for the ride over) the old, red Mazda might have also served as a communal coffin.

Tonight was, I think, the fourth evening that Jen, Jay, Spencer, and I have jammed together, and I have to say that, without a doubt, we're definitely getting a lot better. In fact, so much so that Jen is trying to get us "gigging" at the Skylight Exchange in Chapel Hill during open mic night on April 10. I'd go, of course, but there's no way I put the band before the task of picking up Steffi from the airport. (I think VH1 has already got the footage for "Behind the Music: The Dex Weston Project" in the can. So, you'll be seeing the massive, tear-drenched break-up of our band and perhaps even learn DWP's darkest secret.) However, we may actually land over at Cary's Six String Cafe sometime late next month for its open mic night.

We're adding another song to the previously massive, two-songed playlist. Alongside I Will Survive and Midnight Train to Georgia we're planning to get Paul Simon's Late in the Evening all worked up and polished before we hit the Six String.

The effect of playing the drums on one's body and mental state is absolutely unparalleled. As I said earlier, I was reaching new heights in lethargy prior to and on the drive over. But, after performing a miserable rhythmic accompaniment to Midnight Train and briefly contemplating laying down the drum forever and becoming an accountant, I literally got into the groove and things came together. In fact, my absolute favorite music of the evening resulted from a spontaneous, contemporary-styled jam in which I got to do a madman's solo. I may be physcially dead tired right about now, but mood-wise I'm flying high. Music is better than any intoxicant out there...

(I may be feeling "g-u-d good" (as my grandfather used to say), but I'd bet that Spencer's next-door and first-floor neighbors aren't quite so pleased.)
