2005-04-22 1:49 PM Ex-Mormonism Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (1) Although it's tempting to go off on a heated, vituperative rant about Mormons and their beliefs, I won't. The fact is, I've got a number of LDS-ers as friends, and we've had some of the best back-and-forth discussions about politics, religion, R-rated movies (that's a real hoot!), same-sex marriage, etc., I may have ever had...Plus, a couple of them have offered - most sincerely I might add - to help Steffi and myself with our upcoming move. I have no doubts whatsoever that most of 'em are good, good people.
Never-the-less, Mormonism is still a mind-boggling religious conviction, and one that seems to be pretty darn successful at brainwashing its flock. But not always...because a few of them do get out (see this website for more) and have some fascinating stories to tell. While members of the Church of Latter Day Saints are fascinating creatures, there's nothing more sociologically satisfying than conversing with an ex-Mormon... So far, I've only met two "Ex-ers," and it's been really, really hard not to get out the cassette recorder, sit them down, and interview them for hours on end. In one short conversation (I reined myself in) that I had with S. recently, I came away with this unforgettable little exchange: m39: I never knew you were a Mormon! S: Yup. For much too long. m39: I can imagine it was hard to leave the Church. S: Yup. It was. m39: So what led you to get out? S: I prayed to God. A lot. Wow.
