2005-05-02 11:08 PM Hit and Run Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (6) Well, May is now two days old, and the official countdown to our move has, at least for me, begun. I think the reality of our quickly upcoming move hit me as soon as I put down the phone after talking to "Brooke" from the Durham-based moving company Two Men and a Truck. It took us all of 5 minutes to finalize the schedule, and in another 5 minutes I had an email confirmation spelling it all out for me:
On May 28 at 9 am two men and a truck show up, pack our stuff, and then "impound" the locked truck in a gated, secure area and leave it there through the weekend and over Memorial Day. (I can supply additional locks if I so desire.) On Tuesday, the 31st, the truck and its two man crew get on the road for Blacksburg. I like how the email was signed: :o) Brooke Friendly, I'd say. Hope they're just as friendly with our stuff... *** I can already feel it -- this month is going to be a veritable blur. Steffi's mom is coming in tomorrow for two weeks. UNC graudation ceremonies are on the 14th and 15th, and then two short weeks remain until Brooke unleashes her TMaaT team on our house. Plus, there's going to be myriad social engagements to attend before all the dust settles. Unfortunately, this move has snuck up on us just a little too fast, and we're both left wishing we had a little more time. Of course, we've brought much of this on ourselves, as our penurious (thanks, Paula!) ways account for much of the decision making: Our first official house payment is due on June 1st, and since we don't have a lease here in Fidelity Court, it was a logical step to get out soon and avoid overlap on rent and mortgage. In some ways, though, I'm betting the mad rush will make leaving the Triangle a lot easier. *** At the risk of being sensationalist, I'll report that - in other news -- a friend of ours got hit by a car while walking his dog (with the right of way) across an intersection. The dog, Duke, ran off, leaving his master lying on the ground with a broken leg, some severe scrapes, and a few broken facial bones. Still conscious, R. called his wife and the police and was able to describe the vehicle, a small, red, beat-up hatchback that sped off after impact. Police caught the offender later in the day. The dog ran home, waiting for his "parents" to arrive, and R. spent most of the day in the hospital, earning - thankfully - a release early in the evening. After several months of going without, I started wearing a helmet again while biking to work. This morning I put on a (new to me) Bell "Razor" helmet probably a good half hour before an auto-less R. played demolition derby with illegally oncoming traffic. The accident, however, makes me wonder if I shouldn't be wearing the damn helmet while I'm walking...or even brushing my teeth. I'm also thinking that owning a cellphone ain't such a bad idea, either... Read/Post Comments (6) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
