2005-06-07 2:56 PM The Lyric Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (2) Last night Steffi and I took in a late show at Blacksburg's local indy theater, The Lyric, after walking the quick 35 minutes to downtown. We were among only a handful of folks who had come to see Crash, a film detailing a number of interconnected episodes whose predominant theme was racism and the characters' reactions to such discrimination. A pretty powerful and tear-jerking film at times, a little heavy handed at others, but a well-rounded, distrubing, and entertaining piece.
In addition to the perk of only having to pay $4.00 a ticket (is this movie already at the second run phase? I thought it was relatively new to the area...) we had the good fortune of going to the movies on The Lyric's free popcorn night. At any point before or during the film, we were allowed to (each) get nice-sized tubs of popcorn to take into the theater with us. (I can say somewhat proudly that we didn't get greedy, and only stuck with one helping apiece.) A welcome plus for us since we hadn't really had dinner yet... This kind of positive experience, among with a rapidly growing collection of others, is making us feel right at home here in Blacksburg. We're thoroughly enjoying the house, the fact that we can walk to almost everything (the ABC/Package store is a 15-minute legger away), the wide range of outdoor activities available, and the openess and hospitality of the people. Maybe things will change a bit once we're no longer on vacation, but I expect that once the academic year has begun, there'll be even more opportunities to get to know the area and its inhabitants.
