Writing Impaired

Haven't really been terribly inspired to write much in the journal of late, and don't really feel much like it now, either, for that matter. I'm wondering if I'm about to sail into one of those horse latitudes of writing. If I remember correctly, last year at this time, I only had two entries for the whole month of June. I guess I'm doing better this year...

I guess I can point to our recent activity as reason enough not to spend hours in front of the computer screen. (Although that's gotten a lot easier since VT gave me both a Hewlett Packard TabletPC AND a 17" G4 Macintosh laptop. While I really like Apple I absolutely cannot stand not having both a "Delete" and a "Backspace" key and the fact that there is NO OS-based multimedia management on a Mac. Why can't a freaking $2000 computer not display - automatically - thumbnails of images from within a folder? I don't want to have to open iPhoto just to see how my photos look...) Sorry, should have included a warning and included some harsh words against Tablets to balance the whole thing out.

My sister, Bridger, and their kids were with us for two days last week. It was great to have them visit, and I think both Joel (3) and Anabel (5) had a great time on the city playground/park we have directly behind our backyard. It was great having Steph and her family as our first official visitors, and we had a really hard time not shedding a tear or two when they left. Saturday morning at 9:00, after their departure, our house was much too quiet and inactive for our liking. Trinity the cat, on the other hand, was quite pleased to have calmer environs and came up out of a self-imposed exile to the basement.

Home-ownership still suits us, despite already having to have a plumber come out and replace a leaky outdoor faucet. After I watched the mechanic (Joel) complete the job I was pretty sure that I probably could have managed that kind of repair myself (given an acetylene torch, flux, and some major self-confidence) but there's really nothing like the assurance of having someone professional handle that kind of job. Especially when it involves water and the potential for a flooded basement...One hundred and twenty three dollars well spent.

Oh, yeah, finally got my new VT email address, so if anyone wants to try it out, here it is:

cjbishop(at)vt(dot)edu

(Replace the (at) with an "&" and the (dot) with a ".")

On the very same day that the plumber came to fix the faucet, I discovered a slimy, pale orange patch of *something* in one of our mulch beds in the front yard. Honestly, it looked like some sort of strange chemical spill or as if someone's dog had yakked in our yard. After some Internet searching (see link above) it was clear that we simply had a case of "slime mold" infestation -- something both harmless and typical in areas getting a lot of moisture.

At some point we've got to finally settle on a shade of red and paint the damned "family room." As it stands now, the walls are painted the same butterscotch color as the kitchen. While the latter room looks fine with the light yellow paint, the fireplace in our second living room is much too prominent. So, we've decided to go with a dark red color (something, for some reason, a lot of people do with dining rooms) so that there's a better blend between wall and brick. As we've got plenty of space throughout the house, we're not terribly concerned if the room should - because of the darker color - appear smaller.

And I'm still debating what color (or colors) to paint my 10' x 10' office. I'm still reeling from the dinner/visit we had over at the neighbor's across the street. Their daughter, Macy, who is about 2 years old has a bedroom on the second floor in which at least two of my offices could fit. I have no real reason to complain, though, especially since I don't have nearly as many toys as Macy...

Better wrap this up since Steffi and I'll be walking downtown for the 9:15 showing of *Look at Me*, a French film for which we saw previews before *Crash* -- our last outing at the Lyric.

I'll save my rant about drivers licenses, car registrations, and license plates for another entry. I'd love to say that I have all of that bureaucrap out of the way.
