Gandhi and pacifism

I'm hoping to re-watch Gandhi very soon (picked up the dvd used the other day)- maybe this weekend. It's a very powerful story, and it is amazing to consider what a firm belief in and practice of some values can accomplish.

I've never convinced myself to be a thoroughgoing pacifist -- is that a failure in belief or practice? Probably both. Nevertheless, it has a great appeal to me. It is an elegant idea and it suggests a way of living devoid of aggression. In the end, I suppose I won't give up aggression -- it seems right to use aggression, for example, to protect someone from harm at the hands of another if I am able.

What do you make of Gandhi and of pacifism as a way of life?
