Thoreau's birthday

I guess it is transcendentalist week here with Emerson yesterday and Thoreau today (my grade school was named after the latter, but I don't recall us ever reading anything by him -- pity). Today is Thoreau's birthday, so here are a few quick quotes to celebrate:

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also a prison.

Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed, and in such desperate enterprises? If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.
