keeping a safe distance

I think there is very little in my life I wouldn't be willing for someone else to know, but I still like to keep a safe distance. And sometimes that safe distance includes being remote when I'm anxious. When I'm already worrying about one thing, I'll get as remote as necessary to try to avoid conflict -- so I don't have to worry about that too. And that is sad because it tends to cut off relationship, and make things more lonely for those I care about and for me. But withdrawal is an old familiar, so its kind of comfortable even when it is somewhat self-defeating.
