2007-01-19 7:05 PM running day the forecast is getting worse.
yeah, okay, i get the friggen message already. i better see that snow or pissy isn't even going to cover it. **** it was a run day, and it was a good run day. i kidnapped Gem and we went to the Loop, where i was able to score the smudge sticks i was looking for and a bunch of hand-dipped incense. then we meandered into what we thought was a craft store but was actually an art gallery. i'm not an artsy-type person, but they had some absolutely gorgeous wooden bowls, all inlaid and smooth as a baby's ass. made me think of my brother. (the bowls, not the baby's ass thing.) they were breathtaking, and if i had an extra $600 lying around i might have considered it. there was a lot of pottery and glass, beautiful stuff. in the next room they had what they called "Narrative Tapestry," and i must confess this is where i got lost. i appreciated the workmanship in what was displayed; what lost me was the subject matter. there were two small tapestries depicting dead birds (with blood and everything,) a large tapestry showing a dead man (with a pool of blood) on a beach; an abstract done with metallic threads and red crystals that symbolized a blood spill. okay, all right. enough with the blood and dead things, okay? just didn't ring my bell. in the next store, there was a lot of metal and wire work which was impressive. some handmade soap and candles; odd sculptures and tiny teapots (at $42 a pop, i passed but it was tempting.) however, i was stopped dead in my tracks at a sculpture of a man and a woman -- she was holding his face in her hands, and just the juxtaposition of their bodies -- well, it took my breath away. i must have stood there for fifteen minutes, i was that taken. oh, how it called to me, and i was this close >< to saying fuck it, i need this. but, at this particular junction $88 was too much, way too much for me to afford but way underpriced for that piece, IMO. it was absolutely lovely. i'll be seeing it in my dreams for a long time, i'm thinking. it just seemed to sum up what a beautiful thing it can be between a man and a woman if you are very, very blessed. *sigh* i wish i had thought to bring my camera. it's funny how a piece of art will sing to your soul. **** we then lunched at the famous Blueberry Hill, which had one of the best burgers i've ever had. the place is full of memorabilia and pictures of all kinds of famous musicians -- Chuck Berry, Jon Bon Jovi (oh, drool drool!) Eric Clapton, Little Richard, Bill Clinton (not that he's a famous musician, mind) George Clinton (no relation) and a host of others. i was quite fascinated by the case of Howdy Doody memorabilia, as well as the case that had dolls of the Beatles in it. but my favorite, by far, was Pee Wee. they even had Chairy and the flying peradactyl! too cool. i always felt Pee Wee recieved a bum rap. yeah, you shouldn't masturbate in public, but dang. i loved Pee Wee's Playhouse, and wanted to live there. it just seemed like they had so much fun, and if it was good enough for Laurence Fishburne (Cowboy Curtis) then it was good enough for me. **** there was also a lot of stuffed deer heads, a monkey-looking thing with a yo-yo and a little hat, and a huge statue of Pan. with horns and everything. it was wild. it's dark in there -- the walls are a dark slate blue, and patchy, like someone didn't know what they were doing when they were mudding the wall. the paint is a semi-gloss, which made the walls look almost wet. they even have karaoke in the ELVIS room. heh. **** from the girl in the head shop (yes, but i went in there for incense!) we got directions to the nearest 'new age' shop for crystals. when we returned to the car, i asked Gem if she wanted to go, and she said sure! she said, i would never go someplace new by myself, so yeah! let's do it. (it can be a little dangerous to travel alone in the big city. if you get lost things can get very ugly very fast. still and all, i don't want to be afraid to go somewhere simply because i haven't been there before. that being said, i normally don't travel to unfamiliar places alone either.) (there are exceptions. okay, there's a LOT of exceptions. you -- in the back! shush up.) anyway, we found it with very little trouble, and it's a great shop. i'll be going back for sure. i found what i was looking for (cheap! yay!) and some stuff i wasn't. good deal. **** returned to the hotel, peeked in on Sparky, and took a short power nap. headed out to spend my last running minutes at Borders, with the last of my pennies. of course i found a book i couldn't live without ("The Complete Idiot's Guide To Shamanism") and to my delight, it was my Personal Shopper's Day and not only that, i had a credit of enough to cover the cost of the book. w00t! does it ever get better than that? this has to be heaven, right? anyway, the reason i picked this book (well, one of the reasons, the other one i'm not ready to talk about yet) is the first part of the book is a fascinating history of shamanism and its roots. it has a great writing style, easy to read and understand. lots of info. **** and so ends the running day. i wanted to run tomorrow too, but that's not possible so i'll have to save my trip to the newest adult store for another day. *giggles* actually i wanted to go to the movies (yes, i do go by myself)and see something mind-numbing, but i guess i'll just have to do my mind-numbing here. i've fallen behind in several areas in my sojurn to the Dark Side, so i guess i'll have to get to that. and i'd better be seeing a shitload of snow. Check out TSB for the most legal fun you can have with your clothes on. Read/Post Comments (8) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
