2007-01-24 8:49 AM damned skippy i can okay. it's another day and i refuse to let it beat the shit out of me.
**** i have hopes that the technical snafu is slowly getting straightened out. i've certainly learned more about the Web and its crawlers than i wanted to know. i just feel really, really stupid for missing something that could have adverse effects on anyone. this is the deal: when i started TSB, i password-protected all the forums. meaning, you have to be a registered member (and receive approval by the administrator) in order to access or veiw any of the material on the board. this was to protect copyrights and also because some publishers consider a piece vewiable on the web as already published, thus unsaleable. when we decided to go "public," four fourms became available to view by the public, in order to give people an idea of what we're about. with me so far? unknown to me, Google web-crawls, and saves 'snapshots' of web pages in case you ever lose data, and in order to give you what you want when you search for it. they store them in their 'caches', and to my utter horror, password protection doesn't extend that far. there's a special code the owner of the site has to put in to exclude it from the web-crawler. okay. so, a member Googled herself (hey, she's over 21!) and found some of her supposedly protected material visible. i about had a coronary. so, i emailed the people who own the site on which i have my board. they said we are protected from web-crawlers, and that our content is not indexed. that the only crawler allowed is one that is geared toward ads. wrong. well, it IS indexed. i sent them examples, TK translated my clumsy attempts at geekspeak, and they're looking in to it. i'm pleased with their quick response to our emails; let's see if that trend continues. in the meantime, i've emailed Google to removed the offending pages from their index; it's probably like stomping on King Kong's toe, but they don't know me. i will email them three times a day forever, if i have to. **** worst case scenario: i have to find another place to host TSB. worstest case scenario: i attempt to build my own place, or hire Stacy to do it (i wouldn't have anyone else.) absolutely catastrophic worstest case scenario: my members say fuck this, we're outta here and i have to start from scratch. quitting is not an option. **** i still feel awful i didn't see this, and until it's totally resolved i will most likely sport self-inflicted bruises. **** so, yeah. yesterday sucked. when i got back to my room, i was sick of the computer and i decided to finish my quilt. all it needed was the edges bound -- i had already stitched two sides, only two more to go. completed the third one -- broke the needle on the fourth. all righty then. i know when to call it a day. **** but this is a new day, right? so i can start all over, right? damned skippy. Check out TSB for the most legal fun you can have with your clothes on. Read/Post Comments (8) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
