friday five, scout's way, a la netta

Five questions, with five answers each. Gank whatever you want, and respond if you'd like.

1. Name five books you think you should read that you haven't read yet.

i think what stumps me here is the word, "should". it implies an obligation, and that annoys me. i can list five books i feel i *want* to read, and haven't yet (i've read so little the last couple of years, and this makes me very sad):

One For Sorrow
Duma Key
The Poisonwood Bible
Two For Joy
Three For A Letter

2. Five people can come to dinner, any five people, living or dead. Who do you invite and why?

is this like "Weekend At Bernie's"? heh.

Anne Boleyn. she fascinates me, and i've read a lot about her.

Whoopi Goldberg. love her.

The divine Miss M. my Ultimate Idol.

King Charles II of England. he was my kind of guy. i read about him extensively when i was younger.

MZB. i can't even tell you how much i love her work.

3. Who were five influential people in your life so far, and why?

who were? or still are?

okay, we'll go with the *were*.

my mom. she still is, but she were, too. everything i am is because of her, the good, bad and the ugly. i am very, very grateful to her.

Great-Aunt Louise. i love her second only to my mom. Aunt Louise is the kindest person i ever met in my life. they just don't make them like her anymore.

(courtesy) Aunt Janet. third in line. again, a very kind woman, giving and loving in her way. she could be very strict, but you couldn't find a bigger heart.

Mr. Kula. my high school english teacher. he called me on all my bullshit, and i liked him anyway. because of him, i wrote my first short story and submitted it. it was published in the school literary magazine.

JM. although it's only been recently that i've gone back to where i'd been, JM helped me to remember some Very Good Things buried among the Very Bad Things. gifts like this are precious, and rare. i'm lucky.

4. Name five foods you would like to have at the same meal in order to be truly satisfied.

Food and i have a very uneasy alliance. Appetite has been AWOL for some time, thus the recent shrinkage. however, if i were to put together a nice meal, it would be:

baby greens and spinach with toasted pine nuts and a nice, light basalmic vinegarette...

fetuccini alfredo with deep fried chicken livers...

fresh-baked italian bread from Cameron's (the old Cameron's, before the fire...)with real butter...

tiramisu...

and hot, strong coffee. loaded.

5. List five of your favorite movie or TV quotes, with attribution, if possible.

"HEY! Don't open that! It's an alien planet! Is there air? You don't know!" - Guy Fleegman, Galaxy Quest, 1999

"We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all." - Andrew Clark, The Breakfast Club, 1985

"I went to one of those obedience places once... it was all going well until they spilled hot candle wax on my private parts." - Buck Laughlin, Best In Show, 2000

"Man thinks they are each alone in this world. It is not true. You are all connected. One act can one day affect all." - The Lady, Lady In The Water, 2006

"Vulgarity is not a sin against God, but against polite society. Between you and me, I don't give a shit about polite society." - Brother Justin Crowe, Carnivale, 2003
