If you check out Trish's comment on "Copy-editing question" you'll find a more detailed description of the process than I gave, or than I knew about. Thanks, Trish. At my former publisher, the copy editing and proofreading were done by the same person, but that's not always the case. I'd forgotten about the typesetter, though, who not only can fail to correct the mistakes the copy editor and proofreader find, but can make new ones. This process is changing now: Bantam asks for the book, once all the line- and copy-edits are picked up, to be delivered on disk. This makes me, I guess, the first typesetter.
