a happy working mother day

But I can't say I did much work...

After yesterday’s sad terseness, life got a whole lot better today. Thanks to everyone for commiserating with me.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. We got about two inches of fluffy powdery stuff, so white it was blue. I will leave interpretations of this wintry event occurring in DC around the inauguration to you, Gentle Reader.

C wouldn’t consent to touch it, but she enjoyed walking around in it, watching the dogs frolic, “sledding” down our front yard on a flat cardboard box, then cheering on Mommy and Daddy as we did it. She also enjoyed the pint-size snowperson we made with pecan eyes, carrot nose, and the obligatory stick arms. I too got a kick out of the whole darn thing.

Then we came inside for popcorn and hot chocolate. She enjoyed both, and it was not until naptime that I realized. Caffeine + Toddler = No Nap = No Work Done for Mommy. So while our angelic housekeepers worked downstairs we spent the afternoon upstairs playing dress-up. Isn’t this a required experience for mothers of daughters? OK, and some sons? I was surprised, I was able to round up quite a variety of items—scarves, swim goggles, a decorated “Dutch” hat from our Holland America cruise a few years back, numerous necklaces, and of course, a tiara. So despite the lack of nap we had a grand old time.

Here is an especially good part of the experience for this working mommy. Most of last night’s meetings and activities at the church were cancelled. I say most—unfortunately for me, the only thing that had NOT been cancelled was the webteam meeting—which I am the staff person for. I had talked to the chair of the committee earlier that day, and he was intent on meeting—it had taken us weeks to find a time for everyone to get together. I can understand it, but grr… So as I was picking up C and driving home, I was aware of how wet the roads were. Wet at 4:30=Deathtrap at 9:30. I live 10 miles from the church. So rather than call the chair and say “It’s crazy to have this meeting tonight, let’s reschedule,” I called and said, “You all should meet without me, it’s too long and treacherous a trip for me.” In retrospect, this was quite slick of me—I would have had to attend a reschedule, so this way I got out of it completely!

Great times with my kid, getting out of a meeting—life is good.

And I will hit 20,000 Curiosities Served with this post. Truly bizarre to think about.
