Good Stuff

Finally finished reading The Good Old Stuff: Adventure SF in the Grand Tradition edited by Gardner Dozois.

At the rate of one story a night (all the reading time I have these days), it's taken me a couple of weeks to read them all.

My favorites: "The Second Night of Summer" by James Schmitz and "Gunpowder God" by H. Beam Piper.

I've ordered The Good New Stuff and I'm checking the mailbox every day.

I'll list all the stories later--have to get dressed to go to work and earn the money for dog food, people food and more books.

[Later]
“The Rull” by A. E. Van Vogt
“The Galton Whistle” by L. Sprague de Camp
“The New Prime” by Jack Vance
“That Share of Glory” by C. M. Kornbluth
“The Last Days of Shandakor” by Leigh Brackett
“Exploration Team” by Murray Leinster
“The Sky People” by Poul Anderson
“The Man in the Mailbag” by Gordon R. Dickson
“Mother Hitton’s Littul Kittons” by Cordwainer Smith
“A Kind of Artistry” by Brian W. Aldiss
“Semly’s Necklace” by Ursula K. LeGuin
“Moon Duel” by Fritz Leiber
“The Doors of His Face, the Lamps of His Mouth” by Roger Zelazny
“Mother in the Sky with Diamonds” by James Tiptree, Jr.

This is space adventure (aka Space Opera) at its finest. The only one I couldn't fathom was the last one and that may have been a result of my own state of mind. I had just worked a 16-hour day and was collapsed into my reading chair just barely conscious. I read it twice and it was totally impenetrable. Well, not totally. I got the gist of the story, but that was all.

These were stories from the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's. The companion book, The Good New Stuff, covers the 70's, 80's and 90's. I can hardly wait.
