According to Robert Feldman, social psychologist, University of Massachusetts, women and men tell lies with the same frequency. About 60% of people will tell a lie when chatting with a stranger for 10 minutes.

The purposes of the lies, however, differ according to gender. Women generally told a lie to smooth out a social situation, make everyone feel good. Example: agreeing that a movie was enjoyable when it was one they hadn't seen.

Men, on the other hand, lied to make themselves look good. They closed big deals, climbed impossible mountains, knew important people.

Oddly, most people were unaware they had told a lie and expressed surprise when they viewed the tape.

Feldman is now researching lack of truthfulness during interviews. That is, if he's telling the truth.
