September Heat
Previous Entry :: Next Entry

Just about the only topic of conversation these days is the heat. It has topped out at 111 degrees Fahrenheit for the last couple of days. The ground and the cement work (patio, driveway, sidewalk) are so thoroughly heated up, that even at night the heat radiates outward, keeping the house hot and the nighttime temperatures in the low 90's.

I know my electric and water bill will be sky high, but the heat is intolerable without some cooling and quick showers during the day. I don't know how my friend-in-fur can stand it. I guess she just lies doggo and drinks a lot and pants and pants and pants.

I followed the "Sue method" of bringing groceries in from the car today. The first trip had the stuff to be refrigerated or frozen; after that, I did a trip every hour or so until it was all indoors. The car was too hot to touch, so at the very end I used a towel to protect my hands when I slammed the back shut to lock it.

Even the kangaroo paws, which thrive on neglect, are looking bruised and stressed; the other plants are simply hanging on, waiting for cooler weather.

School starts Wednesday.
