Norm Day

Today is "Norm Day." I live across the street from an elementary school and they get off on making announcements via the all-school loudspeakers. The speakers are mounted on the playground, as well, so that the whole neighborhood gets to listen to the principal lead the Pledge of Allegiance for the entire school and then forget/remember and mumble through last minute announcements. Every day. On and off all day. The teachers and students must hate the constant interruptions.

One of her last minute announcements today was that today was Norm Day. Don't know why every child and the surrounding neighborhood needed to hear that particular bit of trivia, since the only people involved in norming a school are the teachers and the administration. Hasn't she ever heard of, first, planning ahead; and, second, writing memos? Excuse me, purists, I meant to say memoranda.

Mostly I don't hear her blather, because I'm at work. It happens that today I am staying home to care for my SO, so I was treated to a sample of the school's agenda. But if I were a stay-at-home mom or a retired person, I'd be plenty annoyed at the lack of consideration.

Oh, the principal has a word of the day, too, announced to the whole school. Today's word is "consideration." Hmmmmm....
