Catch-22

When I first was promoted to my current lofty (hah!) position, I was told the following:

As the most junior of the people in this position, you must defer to the more senior. Wait your turn to speak up and eventually you will assume more and more leadership roles. Your turn will come.

So I waited and watched and listened and learned. I worked hard (still do). All those senior to me have been promoted or are retired.

I am now, after (mumble, mumble) years, the most senior person in my level where I work. And I am told the following:

You have had your turn. Give the young up-and-comers their turn in the sun (I might add that all the newly promoted are men). When are you going to retire? Shut up, sit down, and hold on. The real men are behind the wheel.

When did my turn happen? Must've been when I wasn't there.
