When the subject of furlough days first surfaced at work, most of us said to ourselves that it would be something of a trade-off: 13 days not at work versus 10 percent pay cut.

Then we found out that we wouldn't be getting many more days off than we're currently enjoying. Our furlough days would be accomplished by converting paid holidays into unpaid holidays.

Our employer gets the same amount of work for less money.
