Here Comes Summer

We had temperatures in the low 90's yesterday; tomorrow is the 1st of July. Ready or not, here comes summer.

The tomatoes are ripening up nicely. We had two in our dinner salad last night; no comparison with store boughten tomatoes. One was a regular red tomato, but the other one was a "black" tomato--different flavor, no acidity. Next year I may plant more heirlooms.

The hummingbirds got two new feeders yesterday. B had put hot sugar solution in the old feeders, and they shriveled and leaked. Cheap plastic. I bought new ones and the hummers seem to find them acceptable, little plastic flowers and all. We sat and sipped our coffees on the patio and watched them flit and fly and feed.

The two orioles showed up, as well. They are beautiful, yellow and black, with white bars across the wings.

The mockingbirds hopped around in the grass for a while; they seem ever hopeful that we will have dropped some crumbs while eating. Max was lounging in the sun about 5 feet away, totally uninterested in birds or squirrels. He never was much of a hunter, and in his dotage his motto seems to be Live and Let Live.

Guess I'd better get on with the day's events. Hope your Saturday is bright and beautiful.
