me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Iolanthe

I can't help it. I don't know how many of you are Gilbert and Sullivan fans, but I am, and I saw Iolanthe the other night. At the end, Parliament has passed a bill saying that henceforth peerages will be given out by competitive examination. The House of Lords decides as a body to give up the mortal realm and join the fairy world. Because, as one peer says, "If lordships are to be determined by merit, we are of no earthly use whatsoever."

Why did this make me think of the guardians of the literary gates?
