me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

Theocracy

The theocracy thing that Dave brought up in the comments bothers me a lot. What seems to have swung this vote was what voters are calling "moral values" but what that's a code phrase for espoused Christian religion. What's the difference between Christian fundamentalists running this country according to their interpretation of Christian principles, and the theocrats who run Iran according to their interpretation of Muslim ones? I have to tell you, to a Jew, the difference is small. The founding fathers separated church from state to protect non-official religions from persecution by the official state religion, and ALSO to protect the state from the overweening arrogance that comes from being an "official" religion. Christians have always been in a majority in this country but it's never been a Christian country. These folks act as though that shift has been made, and that's a huge, huge change.
