sjrozan I'm a writer, at work on my 11th book. This blog is a record of random and less-random thoughts. If you want to know more about me, check my website, linked here. I also had a blog going from spring through late fall 2004 about the publishing process for my 9th book, ABSENT FRIENDS. That blog's called "Progress" and you can find the link here. I won't make any more entries but I'm leaving it up in case anyone's interested; the process is more or less the same from book to book. |

2005-02-05 10:04 PM Hotel Rwanda You must see this movie.
Hard as it is to take, both the larger story -- a million people massacred while the world looked away -- and the smaller story -- twelve hundred people saved by a man who risked his life for, and with, them -- must be told, and could not be told more beautifully, or harrowingly, than this. I could tell you about the performances, the cinematography, but I don't think that's really what matters. What matters is not only this story, but the idea that someone (and I don't know who; I don't know the history of the production of this film) thought it worthwhile to put money into telling the world this story. That, in itself, provides a glimmer of hope (and you know what I usually think about hope). And the Academy needs to be ashamed of its narcissistic self, to pour its nominations on a piece of bombast like THE AVIATOR when there are movies like HOTEL RWANDA still being made.
