sjrozan I'm a writer, at work on my 11th book. This blog is a record of random and less-random thoughts. If you want to know more about me, check my website, linked here. I also had a blog going from spring through late fall 2004 about the publishing process for my 9th book, ABSENT FRIENDS. That blog's called "Progress" and you can find the link here. I won't make any more entries but I'm leaving it up in case anyone's interested; the process is more or less the same from book to book. |

2005-02-21 9:43 AM Sideways Have been trying to get to this movie for months, finally saw it. What IS the big deal? Yes, the wine metaphors are lovely, and yes, there are some funny moments. But the basic conceits, that these guys are good friends and that that two beautiful and together women would fall for them, gets a complete F in my book. I saw nothing in the guys' relationship to indicate they liked each other; they spend a lot of the movie disapproving of each other, leaving each other in the lurch and telling each other off. And if Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen are single it's because they want to be, not because they can't find a man. If they don't love being single but are waiting for Prince Charming, they're not going to settle for a terminally narcissistic actor or a pretentious, depressed, bad-tempered writer, even if they think the writer's book is about to get published. Lemme tell ya, that doesn't take you all that far. A one-night stand with guys just passing through -- that is, the women using the men -- yeah. An emotional investment by the women? I don't think so. What I saw as the strength of the movie hasn't been mentioned in anything I've read, and that's the set design. The details of each room and street are just terrific, even throwaway scenes where the camera doesn't linger more than five seconds.
I call this film a nice little indie fairy-tale, if you can suspend your disbelief that those dames would give those creeps a second glance. Read/Post Comments (7) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
