me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

I love New York

A panhandler's been working my subway entrance for fifteen years now. He's clearly strung out, and a little slow anyhow; but clean, a nice smile, always pleasant. He calls me "Sugar." I give him a buck every time I go by. If I need to hit the ATM I tell him I'll get him on the way back and he says, "I'll be here, Sugar." Yesterday that happened, but when I got back he was gone. This morning I saw him, gave him a buck, and he said, "Thanks, but don't I get two? You still owe me from yesterday, Sugar."

I love this town.
