me in the piazza

I'm a writer, publishing both as SJ Rozan and, with Carlos Dews, as Sam Cabot. (I'm Sam, he's Cabot.) Here you can find links to my almost-daily blog posts, including the Saturday haiku I've been doing for years. BUT the blog itself has moved to my website. If you go on over there you can subscribe and you'll never miss a post. (Miss a post! A scary thought!) Also, I'll be teaching a writing workshop in Italy this summer -- come join us!

LA report, part 2: KRUNK FU BATTLE BATTLE

Earlier this spring I got an email blast that a hip-hop musical by the name of KRUNK FU BATTLE BATTLE was about to open in LA. A hip-hop musical, you say? But... but... Yes, BUT this one is written by Qui Nguyen, of the Vampire Cowboys Theater Co., whose praises you've heard me sing before. AND the show's song lyrics are by Beau Sia, a poet whose work I admire. Damn, says I to myself, LA? Why not NYC, where I could -- wait? LA when? And yes indeed, the show was on while I was there.

So Naomi Hirahara and I spent the afternoon in Little Tokyo, at a community garden, then the Japanese-American Museum, then eating sushi, then the show. LOVED IT! Great energy, terrific dancing. In fact, astounding dancing. All the cast is wonderful, but look out especially for Matt Tayao and Blas Lorenzo. Those guys leave it ALL on stage. If you're in the LA area, looking for a totally cool and energizing evening, this is the one.
