The Real Zombies At Your Door

I keep seeing references to the "zombie apocalypse" these days, and along with those references I see comments, mostly on facebook about how people should focus on living and not on some impending apocalypse or comments such as "Isn't it scary how our generation is so prepared for a zombie apocalypse?" (I am paraphrasing).

I really want to address the latter comments because I am assuming they are referring mostly to people who are into emergency preparedness, ie. stockpiling food and supplies, and while I do agree that some people go wayyyy overboard and get extremely paranoid about the the possible doom of tomorrow, I don't think it is wise to overlook the merit of a little preparedness.

Let's face it, if something really bad is going to happen, no one is ever going to really totally be prepared anyway. I don't think it is possible to foresee and prepare for every bad scenario. On the other hand though, even if you never see a zombie, or have any other kind of cataclysmic disaster, there are still things like job loss, short paychecks, illness, death of a breadwinner, flood, fire, hurricane (the real zombies) and numerous other bad things that can sure throw a kink in your finances and those things alone are worth taking a little time for which to make preparations.

What kind of preparations should you make for unforeseen disasters? It can be as simple as setting aside a little bit of money each week to buy a few extra canned goods and other food items. Buy when items are on sale and mark them with the date that you bought them. Store them in a cool dry place. Food such as flour, pasta, oats and such get more tricky and require storing with desiccants if you are going to store for long periods so if you get that involved, you need to read up on that. Otherwise, if you store enough for a few weeks, months at a time as the government suggests, that would not be an issue. If you decide to store a few things, don't forget other personal essentials, toothpaste, shampoo, batteries, etc.

I think the most important thing to remember here however, is not to be in the extreme with either train of thought. I think it is dangerous to assume nothing will ever go wrong in your life and I think it is dangerous and sad to get so caught up in thinking that it's all going to be so bad, that you forget to live.
