And--a change in color. This is sort of like the beginning of leaves turning.

Of course, fall colors are really subtle here in the Deep South, and they don't usually show up till mid-November. But it's the thought.

Already I've noticed a bit of a drop in the temperatures. Part of it is the rain we've been having, but the other part is the time of year. The cooler it gets, the less energy certain types of weather coniditons can feed on.

And it was a relatively blah day here. I puttered around doing Stuff, and just as I had gathered enough energy to do some outside work it began to rain. Was my timing perfect or not!!

Did I mention that yesterday my street got about three inches of asphalt on it? It looks lovely. It hasn't been this smooth since they completely redid the roads more than 20 years ago. Since then, at my end, it's just been a series of patches. I certainly hope that the unpaved parts along the sides are brought up to the same level as the road. At the moment there's a definite drop of about 3 inches.

Boh Brothers is the contractor. They are the ones building the new I-10 twin spans across Lake Pontchartrain. And they are the ones who got the initial repair, and completed the first phase (getting one span driveable in both directions) so quickly that they earned themselves a $15 million bonus. They have a very good reputation, so I'm sure I can breathe easily about the step down from the pavement.

Every time I see "Boh Brothers" or hear the name, I think about the time when there was "challenge" to a levee (from a high river), and the newscaster got the assurance that "Boh Bothers is bringin' some rip-rap." Having lived here long enough to know who Boh Brothers (pronounced BO) was, and also having learned what rip-rap is, it all made perfect sense.

This evening (tomorrow at the latest) I have to get my syllabus reworked in line with the different text from the last time I taught. And grade the vocab quizzes and the maps. Having made those plans (which involve sitting in an air-conditioned coffee house) I'm sure the weather will be perfect for yard work.

The last time I was at WalMart I bought a small bag of dog biscuits for the raccoons. It looks like they took several. If these keep them happy, I'll get more. It's not as messy as when they help themselves to the kibble.

Another basically unremarkable day. The furthest I've been from the house is when I drove the one block to YD's little house to leave a check for a lawn man tied to the back door. Wait--the man wasn't tied. Back up----to leave a check tied to the back door for the lawn man.

When I got there I was greeted by the dog she'd once owned, who now lives with the people across the street. He is VERY efficient about announcing people who stop, unless they are "regulars." He stopped barking as soon as I called out a hello to him. He knows I have legitimate business there.

Maybe I'll do something productive this evening. Or maybe I'll just veg out and either read or do Cross Sums (kakuro) puzzles.

Happy September 1.
