when a semi hauling a trailer loaded with telephone pole-sized logs jackknifes at the top of a very major interstate overpass?

Fortunately, it was heading west and I was heading east. But even the east side was closed down until they got the front end off the barrier between the east and west lanes. As afternoon accidents go, the slowdown wasn't particularly spectacular on my side (eastbound.) By the time I got in sight they were trying to get the damaged vehicle hooked up somehow to a tow truck. Meanwhile the National Guard (and their cammy-painted Hummers) kept any westbound traffic from getting on the interstate. People trapped on on-ramps shut off their cars, grabbed a cold drink if there was one handy, then sat down to watch the show. The line of parked cars on the westbound interstate (not counting on-ramps) stretched about five miles.

Once clear of the trouble area, there were no other slowdowns on my way home.

My class went well today. I read them the story of Isis and Osiris (Egyptian mythology). One person asked what a phallus was. I told her, using the correct term. Then I mentioned phallic symbols, such as the Washington monument. And went on with the lecture. I managed to finish up the Egypt part and get a head start on the next section.

This classroom doesn't have a map rack, and I can't find the map I need in the department office. So, as I was explaining something about what was where I took a deep breath and free-handed the east end of the Mediterranean on the board. It was definitely not to scale, but were they ever impressed! And I know from another time when I had to freehand maps that they will remember locations and relationships better after seeing them sketched out. (Maybe I won't look for the map after all.)

Over at Newcomb I found a parking spot at a decent distance where I didn't need to use the magic blue card. Once inside, I made good progress with my mandala lady's papers and completed another carton.

I'll be home tomorrow--except for an afternoon appointment with my orthopedist. Laundry is near the top of my list, along with vacuum. Yuck. Getting caught in traffic is almost better than that.
