Yes--the first time (that we know of) that humanity stepped on the dirt and rocks of Earth's satellite.

How many people stayed up watching till that actual small step for man? I think it was about 3 AM EDT when it happened.

OD stayed up, but I think we let YD sleep, as she wasn't even three years old.

I grew up on science fiction and worked at the Cape in the early years of rocket testing. So did my husband, which is why we were there that day. When I was at Cornell I joined the Rocket Society. But, since I wasn't there all that long I never did get to take part in a test of one of their little rockets.

There was so much hope and anticipation then, but the political point had been made by getting there first. And research money was needed for the latest wars.

So our vision has turned inward, to self and today. Maybe tomorrow, but not ten years from now.

This morning I snapped in the weed whacker's newly charged battery and whacked weeds for over an hour. I plan on going to work tomorrow, but Tuesday I'll be out there early whacking some more weeds and getting all the green stuff down to more or less the same height. And by the time I have used up the eight hours (more or less) on the current battery, I will have charged the second one up.

I spent the afternoon at PJ's doing geek reading and chatting with a couple of people I haven't seen in months. I also ran into my lawyer friend and wished her luck on the bar exams next week. She's starting to rethink her public defender idea, but is still interested in public service of some kind.

And tomorrow starts a new week.
