Getting Light Later

Today I had my headlights on all the way in to Tulane.

It was just about full dark as I pulled away from the house. Once I got on the interstate I could see the increasing light behind me and then ahead of me. Obviously, the earth turns at more than 70 mph.

By the time I was into the city I could see the horizon and the buildings as well as the city lights. It won't be too long before I'll be getting to work in the dark.

The position of the sun also determines my lunch break. When it is boring itself into my left eye it's time to move to the lobby (where there are all sorts of chairs and a table) and eat.

The biggest problem with this "extended daylight" time is that there are kids waiting for school buses in the pre-dawn darkness. And far too few parents make sure their kid has reflective patches front and rear. My area doesn't have sidewalks, so that adds another hazard.

I broke down and watched the "debate" last night. I thought Palin carried herself well and showed a true politician's ability to give non-answers to questions. (So did McCain.)

And speaking of elections, Louisiana has a primary tomorrow. We'll be electing some judges and party candidates for higher offices. One of the hurricanes cancelled the scheduled primary date.

This means that if the top vote-getting party candidate gets less than 50% of the party vote, the general election will have a run-off to establish who the party candidate will be. And then there will be a special election when the candidates from opposing parties meet.

(When you've lived here a while this all makes good sense.)

It is so nice having somewhat cooler weather--I feel almost like doing yard work.
