My Incredibly Unremarkable Life
A Journal (more or less)

Another day at home, trying to get a modicum of order into the daily stuff.

It's been so long since Pearl Harbor that the "event" has diminished in importance newspaperwise.

When I read Rhubarb's journal this morning the date clicked, and I made a rather extensive comment about it.

And here's what I was thinking about it:

I was in kindergarten back then, living in northern N.J. within easy commuting distance of NYC.

And it wasn't very long before the schools had regular air raid drills in which the whole school trooped down into the basement.

Then there were the War Bonds (which have morphed into today's Savings Bonds) and little booklets to fill up with War Stamps and trade the full booklet for a bond.

And, of course, competition between the various classrooms.

Living in the Northeast, not all that far from New York City, meant there were plenty of air raid drills in which we all headed for the basement or other (supposedly) safe places.

Anybody remember V-mail?

Those were single sheets that got photographically miniaturized to about half size so that they would be less of a burden on the mail system.

Rationing--of food and gasoline. Car owners got classified by the importance of their driving. My father was a travelling salesman (of industrial cleaning products) and he had the (essentially) unlimited A tag.

My mother's car had the lowest mileage tag--I think it was a D tag.

Anybody reading this who is from the central and/or midwest US? What was it like "out of range" of German and/or Japanese bombers?

Other than the recollections, it was another IUD.
