I am now in love with Flannery O'Connor. Fear not, Miss Dickinson, no one can ever take your place, but dear Flannery has now joined our circle. Actually, I suppose that her entry has made the circle. I have realized how similar my early writings are to Miss O'Connor's. I stopped that writing for fear of being too grotesque. No more. Forward! And here is a poem that fell out of my heart on this Valentine's Day: (in regard to the photo of Flannery O'Connor on the outdoor steps with a peacock at her feet) Why Had I Never Noticed the Peacock Before? Standing right there To the side Beneath Her gaze even following it All I saw Was her face The glasses And the crutches Her stance Her expression Self-assured Strong Beautiful |
