WaPo Takes On PA

Good Washington Post article on the evils of PublishAmerica. Listen, y'all -- publishing isn't a sneering elitist ivory tower business (not uniformly, anyway). I'm a shy, socially awkward shlub from rural North Carolina who never did an MFA program, and now I work for a magazine and sell fiction regularly to real publishers. I did it by working hard and being lucky and, when luck wasn't available, by being persistent, and that's how you can do it, too. Do not believe PA's lies. Though I suspect I'm preaching to the choir here. PA also likes to talk about a prejudice against POD publishing, and while there's a certain element of that in the business, it's mostly a prejudice against confirmed purveyors of crap; my print-on-demand collection got a decent review in Publishers Weekly, for instance, because it came from a reputable press. Review outlets don't spurn PA books because they're print-on-demand. They spurn them because the company is an author mill.
