This is the story I wrote at Hidden City in Lake Tahoe in 2004. It was published in the late lamented Lenox Avenue online magazine later that year, and reprinted in The Year's Best Fantasy 5 in 2005. The mostly villainous protagonist, Mr. Zealand, has been lurking in my mind for a long time, but this is the only story I've successfully written about him. I might write another someday. But this story certainly has legs -- this is its third appearance in three years, and it'll be in my collection next year, too.
