Reading: old copies of Asimov's
Music: Utopia's Anthology
TV/Movie: The Road To El Dorado
Link o' the Day: Asimov's Message Board

A friend of mine who is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars informed me this morning that he received a letter stating that that organization is throwing its support behind Kerry. Likewise the AFL-CIO. This is good news as it's another nail in Bush's political coffin. The most warming revelation, however, was learning that one of my co-workers--someone who does not like to think about politics or the consequences of politics--actually admitted to having spent the weekend thinking about the current misadministration and Iraq and came to the conslusion that Bush needs to go.

Now if we can see this trend continue.

Sending out more submissions today. Both are longshots (as they're those cursed and beloved recursive stories). Fingers crossed, and all that.

The latest news on the freelance typesetting front is that it appears that an upcoming project will be a history of the Underdog TV series--written by the creators themselves.

There's no need to fear! UNDERDOG IS HERE!

I can't wait.

So there's a lot of hubbub over a adult-oriented story that appears in the March 2004 issue of Asimov's--particularly in that the magazine was part of a school fun-raising drive and that a young girl, who had ordered a subscription through this service, had her mother stumble across the story and raise holy hell about it.

Okay... so Asimov's has never claimed to be a children's market. The responsibility shouldn't fall so much on Asimov's as it should the subscription service or the school. Other magazines on that subscription list included Equire. I remember them having soft-core porn imagery in their pages at one point. Asimov's just had the bad luck to be the one that got caught. Will the subscription service vet the other magazines?

Apparently Grand Rapids, Michigan, where this story broke, is a bastion of small, narrow-minded zealotry. The local newspaper seems to be fanning the flames--either making a mountain out of a molehill, and aiming its ire in the wrong direction.

Parents, if you don't want your kids reading inappropriate material, then pay closer attention to what they're reading.Hell, talk with your kids. And for God's sake--read with a sense of context as well. Don't read through a cardboard tube. You're missing out on the good stuff.

Today's link goes to the Asimov's Message Board where more on this topic can be found.

Enjoy!
