I was teaching away on Tuesday, reviewing for the French Revolution & Napoleon test on Thursday. 2:21pm, 6th hour, the phone rings.
“Mrs. Van Eeuwen.”
“Um… Amy? This is Liz.”
I have a brain fart. Who is this? Social Worker!
“Okay. Oh! Oh my gosh, hi!”
“Do you have a couple minutes?”
I quickly throw a worksheet at the kids and apologize – “I have to take this call.”
“Well, Amy, I have a referral for you.”

And the world changes.

I wrote down all the information from the medical, and Liz sent a copy via email to a doctor we had selected to look it over –Dr. J., trained in Russian medical reports.
Doug and I talked… we both had promised not to peek at the pictures that arrived on email – and both did anyway! We read over the medical, looked up terms… and waited. And grinned. And chose a name. Then told ourselves we were too foolish, we had to wait to hear back from Dr. J. And gazed at the pictures. And prayed a lot. And truthfully, I didn’t get much sleep last night.

Dr. J. called Doug this afternoon with a review of the medical file. No major problems; in fact, one of the healthier children she had ever seen. Very little chance of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. All tests negative. No major worries. Gave us some suggestions to look for when we see him – and have a nice trip!

So we decided, roundabout 3:30pm this afternoon, to accept the referral.

We will travel for our first trip on January 23 or 24. Region: Ekaterinburg. East side of the Ural Mountains. Very cold. Lots of snow. Currently 19 degrees there. 10 hours ahead of us.

Lots, lots, lots more to tell you all – but the 8th graders have nothing to do tomorrow. Must plan a couple days of Constitution work. Try to wrestle my brain away from the adorable pictures we received… for an hour or so. Tomorrow – I update website and journal lots of information.

Oh, the name? Roman is his given name, and Doug liked it a lot, and I couldn’t argue. Leonard is my father’s middle name, and and my paternal grandfather's first name. It’s quite a handle for a little one! There are approx. 27,000 “Roman”s in the United States. In Russia, however, it is on the “top 10 list” for boys.

Roman Leonard. Our son.
