Can you believe it? I only took 2 rolls while in Russia. Could be because we were very busy... I also was uncomfortable taking pictures of some things without asking first. Will be much more brave the second time.

Of course there is a LOT to journal, but today I am still very sleepy and sick with sinus drainage and sore throat. Must rest up. So I'll leave you with my long-lasting impressions of the trip and the country. The images that arise immediately when thinking of our trip. Besides our son, of course.

Smelly water in Ekaterinburg.
Security very visible in every store.
The hospital was MUCH worse than the orphanage.
Heat is not used much in the cars. Even though it works.
St. Basil's. Oh my gosh.
The "seen" military presence.
How we're tracked by the government. We have to show our passport for everything, and when checking into hotels, they keep it for an hour for "registration purposes." When exchanging money - passport, please!
The drive to Pervouralsk - we passed a memorial. Our translator finally explained that it was for the 12,000 dead found in the swamps outside of Ekaterinburg, dumped during Stalin's administration. These bodies were dug up while they built a road... locals are not sure how many more are still out there among the birch trees.
Arrival into Pervouralsk - the pipes! Snaking through the city, around and OVER the roads. We didn't see the copper refinery, but were told that downwind, they have green snow.
American Christmas music played on Russian airline.
