I signed Roman and I up for "Aqua Infants" at the local rec center. It is 8 days for a half hour each. Today was our first lesson. It was... interesting. I took Roman a little early so he could sit and look around. The pool is crazy at the rec center - it has about 5 different pools in one; shallow, fun, deep water, whirlpool, and one where a big slide dumps into. So we sat for a few minutes just watching people.

We eased into the shallow end at the start of the lesson. It was the kind that doesn't have an edge, like the lake. It was a little chilly at first, but once in I got used to it. Roman, on the other hand, was not happy at all. He didn't cry; but scrunched up his face and tried to climb UP me. We sat down and sang a little song about getting our tummys wet, our arms wet. We were supposed to then get our kids wet while we sang. Roman would have none of it. The minute the water hit his tummy, he grabbed me around the neck and pulled up.

Then we went deeper in the water, walking down the slope. Once I was waist deep, Roman began trembling. Honestly, he was so scared! We did little things like float on our tummies, that was okay. Float on our back... NO. Roman struggled mightily against that.

But, it got better. About 20 minutes into the lesson, he figured out he could splash. He loves to splash in the tub. So he got much more comfortable in the water. We have a slight language difficulty - I don't think he understands "kick" "move your arms" that kind of thing. Cuz he wouldn't do a thing. But it was neat overall - they had little floaty toys, cups to dump water... it's basically getting them used to the big water.

When the lesson was over, I walked us back to the shallow end. Roman did stand up in the water (his knee-deep) and walked his way out of it, and he thought that was pretty neat.
