Books and other stuff I feel like discussing

By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Butter Cows

Comments on the last blog entry sent me back to the guidebook to read more about the Iowa State Fair

The butter cow is sculpted from 550 pounds of butter, which, when the fair is over, is recycled and used again for three to four years before the artist starts over with a new 550 pounds.

The "Butter Cow Lady" is Duffy Lyon, and she has been sculpting cows for over 40 years! Her picture is in the US/Canada version of 1000 PLACES.

The fair has nearly 900 categories of food judging, and the vegetable categories are the most bizarre, in 1992 a squash weighed in at 412 pounds. But the pie category sounds absolutely scrumptious, do ordinary fair goers get to sample, I wonder? Or alternatively, take home recipies?

Also featured are hog calling contests, husband calling contests, cow-chip throwing and other pursuits enjoyed by Iowans.

The fair began in 1854, and over 15,000 persons a year compete for the various awards. Maybe this does belong in a list of 1000 worldwide destinations not to be missed.

The day I was there, as I previously mentioned, the temp was 108 degrees, and I spent the time looking for air conditioned display barns and drinking quart sized cups of iced tea. Didn't need a potty break until after an hour and a half on the road heading back to my sister's house.
