Books and other stuff I feel like discussing

By education and experience - Accountant with a specialty in taxation. Formerly a CPA (license has lapsed). Masters degree in law of taxation from University of Denver. Now retired. Part time work during baseball season as receptionist & switchboard operator for the Colorado Rockies. This gig feeds my soul in ways I have trouble articulating. One daughter, and four grandchildren. I share the house with two cats; a big goof of a cat called Grinch (named as a joke for his easy going "whatever" disposition); and Lady, a shelter adoptee with a regal bearing and sweet little soprano voice. I would be very bereft if it ever becomes necessary to keep house without a cat.

Results from Googling

I've heard from more than one resident of my community that they have been recently approached by the groups of kids selling magazines. I also did a little research via Google, specifying the name of the suburb where I live.

Interesting results

Our municipal code requires a peddler's license, and a potential customer is entitled to see and inspect it at the beginning of the conversation.

As pointed out in the article Tom linked to in responding to my prior comment, these schemes are more than a little exploitive of the kids ringing the doorbells.

It's very unusual to be approached twice in a short span of days. Probably a goof on the part of the supervising crews. I wish I had known about this scam before the second stop on my porch. Now I know to watch for a van nearby; to ask to see a license; to call the police - not on the 911 line, but to call their local administrative number; and to try to find out a little more about the kids - where are they staying locally? how long have they been doing this? what training in salesmanship do they receive?

I probably wouldn't get very far with my later set of questions, but I can't quite let go of the thought that I might have been able to help them think through what exactly they got themselves into.
