Half Way Point

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Today I got my “revenge” on the Student Council campaigners. I gave my class an hour-long activity that had them working in small groups, some of them with their backs to the campaigners who continued with their scripted spiel in front of the room. Some of the students were listening, as was I, but most of them worked on their exercise while the nominees talked. I guess their speeches are targeted to students who are just sitting there with their lecture interrupted.

By my second class when the campaigners asked for five minutes of my class time, I warned them that the students were busy and noisy, and they said “We’ll catch their attention.” Pretty smug of them, I thought.
One of those running for college assembly president is a former student of mine. He even asked if the students had any questions. Of course they asked him to answer the activity I assigned them, which this guy had done before when he was my student. But he had forgotten what the answers were. He got back at me by thanking me for wearing their party colors since last Monday.

Later I’m also proctoring for an exam of one of my co-teacher, who was just on the phone behind me. This means she’ll be proctoring one of my exams during the finals, which makes two of them now who owe me proctoring time. What makes this one weird though is that the students are prone to cheating; it’s a lab room where some students are facing each other, and I heard her on the phone that she’ll just be going out to some deli with friends.
