Another First: Some Sort of A Rant

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Bad news. Even Mr. Pro-Science Vice President for Academics and Research agrees that since the high school students are not studying here, that even if they sign the waiver form, the school is still liable for anything that happens to them. Yeah. Despite my eleven years of experience, let’s trust the pessimistic outlook of one whose head’s bloated from being in the egotistic position to turn down everyone requests, despite not knowing anything about the operation.

This means my stargazing session will not be overnight anymore, so it will be shorter. So it’s now just Friday night instead of Thursday and Friday.
Other than that, the first day of the Science Summer Camp went off well. 55 out of the 67 confirmations showed up. And there were two students who showed up despite the fact that we didn’t receive any confirmation from them or their school. We’re still keeping out options open just in case the twelve students still show up tomorrow.

While waiting for the late registrants, we showed the students a science film about the origins of the universe, which got me hooked. I’m going to borrow it and watch the full 90 minutes one of these days.

The dean’s address to the participants was a little scatterbrained, and he also complained about the vice dean referring to him parents of students who are going to be kicked out because of accumulation of failures. As if the dean will suddenly overturn years of policy because they asked.

The recruitment video seemed very gratuitous when I saw it. I don’t know how their campus tour went, but the games this afternoon was also a little disorganized. I would have made sure the students couldn’t overhear or go back during “Pass the Message.” I would have timed the individual attempts at the Balloon Race and the Foot Structure. In the first, they are supposed to bring a balloon a certain distance without using their hands or letting it fall to the ground. In the second, they were supposed to show only a certain number of feet on the ground, like seven or four, despite having at least eight members per group.

I really don’t have to be there tomorrow, when they have their exposure to Biology and Math. So I guess I’ll sleep in late.
