The End of Summer and the Start of the New Term

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Last year for the mass preceding the General Assembly one of my co-teachers was asked to take part in the offertory. On the day itself she sent me a text message saying she wasn’t sure if she could make it on time, and asked me to go there in her place. She made it to the mass, but she stayed in the back and let me sub for her anyway.

This year she was again asked to take part in the offertory. I was there when she received the call from the Pastoral Office. I just told her half-jokingly, “They really want you, so don’t foist it off on me again.” She’s resigned to the role now.

12:57 PM It’s also the middle of the week, three days into the old students’ adjustment period, but there have not been any load assignment changes due to subjects not having enough students and newly opened sections.

The Brother President Designate, who will be taking seat next school year, did not endear himself to me because he used The Matrix as an analogy about the university’s goals being “worth fighting for.”

Some of the senior faculty were making fun of my thesis student. I didn’t feel up to defending him. I’ll just be glad when he’s out of my hands. All his panelists showed up for the assembly, so I was able to tell them of his progress, or lack of it, as it is.
I told them they can view the program he made if they want, even though he has yet to submit the paper. I don’t know the proper procedure for that anyway. When we defended our thesis, we only showed the program to the panelists during the defense, although it wasn’t supposed to be software for general use, but just a tool for gathering our results. On the other hand, the other astronomy software theses I did advise and give consultation to before only demonstrated the program during the defense, despite being for general use.

I guess it’s still up to the panelists if they want to have a peek at it before the defense.

10:27pm Just got back to school (to stay overnight again) after the replenishment part of the department workshop. Got a cab ride with the chairman, who lives 10 minutes away from the school.

One of the panelists did look at my thesis student’s program. Of course she’s not satisfied.

During the college assembly, I was asked by the High Performance Computing Lab head to help him set up the computer and the projector for the presentation. Unfortunately, the adapter powering the projector was missing, so it couldn’t be used.

He had to go back down to the floor below in the department and print his slides on acetates. When he did present it, I only recognized a few of the slides. There were diagrams added to better present the concept of parallel processing, but he took out the parts about the lab’s physical layout and specifications. He did add possible applications, but given who he credited for helping him come up with those (someone else from our department), it didn’t highlight the potential for Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics use. A little ironic, considering they’re more prevalent in movies like Hollow Man, and such.
