We're Here, We May Be Late, But Our Tuition Pays Your Salary So Teach Us

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Another thing from yesterday is up until then I was getting index cards from students who have just started going to class, and it’s the end of the second week of class.

And since our continued discussion on the zodiac constellation calendar assumes knowledge of at least the second meeting topic, these late adjustment enrollees are left in the dark for the entire period.

So now some of them (at least one in two of the classes), are asking for consultation to find out how make AND use the zodiac constellation calendar.

Am I really up to repeating for a handful of students an entire lesson that I have already given three times to a total audience of one hundred plus? No.

What’s my alternative? I could type out and printing instructions that I give to the students. It’s a little more effort, but at the very least it’s not complete spoon-feeding.

On the other hand, I could just tell them that part of the consequence of them missing the first few sessions of class is the unenviable task of asking their classmates for a copy of their notes, and maybe to tell them about the previous lessons. They can complain about the difficulty of dealing with students that are not their block mates, but they should have thought of that before deciding on late adjustment.

I can already foresee that either of these two scenarios above will have some of the students still approaching me for help on the use of their calendar.

I don’t plan to make it any easier for them, asking them first how they understand the instructions. That way at least I’ll know if they made any semblance of an attempt at finding out how to work it rather than expecting the teacher to just hand over everything on a silver platter.

I probably can ask my co-teachers about their opinion on this, but that will have to wait until Monday, when a lot of them will be around for an impromptu consultation. Or will they resent it the same way I resent having to do it for demanding students?
