The Time to Ask and the Time to Learn For One's Self

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I forgot to mention last time about students in both my introductory programming and astronomy classes, during their exercise and test respectively, both asking me if what they were doing is right. I was caught off guard that I forgot my stock answer until now, which is, “If that’s how you understand the problem.” I can’t believe some kids still have the gall to ask that.

I slept overnight last night, and the computer I used in the Medical instrumentation lab was open to a web site on the analysis of this poem, obviously one of the students too lazy to think for himself or herself.
Turning to a Pascal textbook for my programming exercise today on if-else statements, I started printing them out and cutting them at forty minutes to my first class.

My 920am astronomy class today asked about their test, of course. I said I hadn’t finished checking them. In response to their question if anyone got perfect so far, I said no. Do I remember what the mistakes were, was the follow up question. Obviously not, I answered.
We continued on the discussion of the constellations, where I told the somewhat lengthy tales behind Virgo and Leo separately.

In the computer lab afterwards, it was only three-fourths through the class when I doubted if it was possible for them to complete the exercise with the limited commands we had discussed so far. I was able to finish it, but in deference to their obvious difficulty in answering it, I told them I’d post the solution outside the department tomorrow morning. In fact, I already posted it this afternoon, complete with documentation comments.

Finishing lunch at 12pm afterwards, I decided to catch up on sleep again until my 220pm class. Preoccupation made me dream about my lecture, and I woke up more tired than rested when I realized I had to repeat that sleep lesson all over again.

In this class, which is composed of College of Education students, there were some that were not present when I called roll because, according to their classmates, they were attending this meeting about being scholars. I just said that whatever University office was in charge of that should give me a letter stating that’s where they were, to be excused. They arrived in the middle of the discussion, so now they have to ask for that letter to prevent from being marked as late instead of as absent.
