Ordering College Subjects Like Food Off of a Menu

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

What is supposed to be the minimum requirement for a dormitory to be accredited by the school anyway?
Adequate security for the inhabitants and their possessions? 24-hour accessibility even by public transport? Uninterrupted electricity, water and phone line supply? Regluar maintenance and sanitation schedule? Adequate facilities for studying? Is a stove necessary? What about a refrigerator? A Washing machine? A television? A computer with internet access?

Now *I* have to decide what makes a room or bedspace for rent suitable for the school's students, and enforce it.

Speaking of taking up jobs, looking at how harrassed the registrar's office was yesterday, even with their student assistant, I really wanted to help out. But I guess the best I can do is to just perform my part well, which is to continue with the academic advising for the students who want to adjust, when they do approach me for it.

Yesterday there was already one student who wanted to take PE Three and PE Four at the same time. It's not an uncommon occurrence; it's just that this guy was already at 19 units, and would be 21 with the second PE subject added. I had to ask what his grade point average was last term, and for the whole schoolyear. His GPA seemed to have increased with his increasing number of units from the first to the third term. So I approved it.

Another student, engineering, was complaining that when I gave her the list of subjects offered, I did not include Integrated Calculus, for which there is a section open for only engineering students.

I reminded her that during the week of academic advising, the only list of subjects we had to go on were the regular courses offered for all the majors, as well as the ones from the previous year, which did not include InteCal, which is only listed regularly for the third term.

I also repeated what I told them then, which was that if there are any free sections and electives opened after course card distribution (two weeks ago) then they can just go during the adjustment period and add them to their load.

It wasn't just the student's initiative to add subjects, it was also the parents, who wanted their child to take as many subjects as possible during the early terms of their study, before the mandatory 10% minimum tuition fee increases.

The same is actually true of my cousin, who also had only 14 untis, and added BIOCHEM and the lab component (5 units total) to his load. Of course that mean that he had to pay twice the amount for his science laboratory fee: one for my electriciy and magnetism subject, and another one for BIOCHEM.

Good thing that the biology and chemistry subject is not a prerequisite to anything. It was just that their classmates are now the BUsiness Administration students instead of their engineering batch, who will be taking that subject regularly next term.
