Having An Idea of the Events for the School Year Ahead

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I was doing a good job – if I may say so myself, during the third morning session of the Student Leadership Camp, of organizing all the proposed activities of the Student Affairs Office, the Student Council and the Recognized Student Organizations into one computer software table that was projected into the stage for all to see.

There were some minor conflicts that had to be resolved on the spot, such as the start of the sports festival as envisioned by the Student Affairs office occurring AFTER the Student Council planned their drafting of the incoming freshmen.

I was also relieved that Sir Ronnie the Student Affairs director had already gotten a semblance of order in the procedure for approval of activities, especially with the one month lead time. Of course he said it was mostly a formality, as the only way an activity would be disapproved is that if all the resources (including audio visual equipment and venues) they requested for that day and time are already being used by other elements of the campus, especially the integrated school.

But since there is a recognition day for the best organizations and best activities at the end of the school year, rushing the paperwork for a planned activity would count against the organization for the award, as well as during reevaluation for re-accreditation of the organization for the next school year.

At the same time, we also had to move the projector from the middle of the stage because the maintenance personnel were already there (it was past 11am) to set up the altar for the mass – the culminating activity of the camp – for 1pm.

I’m getting off topic though. There was only one more organization to go when I was told by the head of the security office (always assigned to check in on the auditorium every once in a while when there is an activity) that there were four people in the faculty room who needed to talk to me about the science camp.

In fact the secretary sent me a text message (which I read on the way to the faculty room) that I could have delegated the task to the student assistant assigned to Student Affairs for the summer, but since he was also part of the leadership camp (and, is in fact, the commissioner for socio-cultural activities) I decided not to take him away from the proceedings.

These were four late sign ups to the science camp who wanted copies of the parent consent form, and at the same time, the schedule of activities and the list of things they were supposed to bring to the camp.

I just printed four sheets, and by the time I finished, the leadership camp participants were already trickling back to their quarters in preparation for lunch.

It was a little disappointing though that despite all warnings beforehand that the Eucharistic Celebration would start at exactly 1pm to respect the time of the priest, that I had to pass by both the male and the female quarters at a few minutes before one o’clock to remind the students that they should be on their way up already.

Some of them, apparently, had chosen that time to take a shower after the morning’s activities.

So I underestimated and will have to conclude this event in the succeeding post. Till then this has been session number 598, two days from another milestone. Class dismissed.
