The Pros and Cons of Conveniences in Lecturing

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

For today I will go a little closer to home in talking about some of the consequences of the previous term’s studies – with regards to the students, of course.

By this I mean talking about the engineering majors, particularly all of the regular sophomores and some irregulars.

These were my students in introduction to electricity and magnetism two terms ago, who I warned that if they did not take to heart the concepts that I was teaching them, when they took up the next subject which is Intermediate Electric Circuits One, and failed that, they would have to strike out a whopping total of five subjects from the list they are supposed to take for the third term.

Apparently forty percent of the students in that class did not heed my warning, although for some of them it was already their second take.

I cannot discount the fact that it may also be the fault of the teacher, a part-timer who discussed mainly problem solving concepts with slides in presentation software.

The students then have a tendency of scanning each slide instead of following the step-by-step solution.

The teacher sometimes (or often) gives in to the temptation of skimming over tedious and/or repetitive steps.

The students, having been - or knowing that they will be - given handouts printing the computer file, do not get the same absorption they might have copying down the solution.

Sometimes, this assurance makes the students pay almost no attention to the “lecture” altogether, factoring in also the fact that the class is from six to seven thirty in the evening before which a third of the students have at least a three hour vacant period.

One of these students is Deiv.

Thus, he is among those who barely have the minimum number of units enrolled this term, just like the fate of a couple of the higher batch the same time last year.

Session 917 also failed the crucial pre-requisite subject. Class dismissed.
