Students Wanting Things To Their Advantage Just Because They Weren't There When the Rules Were Given

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

On the fourth day of the second week of the third term, I met with my general science requirement mechanics lab class.

As expected, there were some students who did not show up during the first week who made their first appearance then, so I had to assign them to the already formed groups from the first meeting.

For some this meant being separated from their fellow intentionally late enrollees, but for the others, it meant getting to be in the group with their Communication Arts batch mates.

There was even one student who asked if his friend could still transfer from another section, I said that it was okay because there was still one group with less than the maximum number of members.

Also as expected, a student who was late asked if he could still take the quiz. I guess his classmates allowed him to make the request, even though they were present when I made the announcement that the quiz is only for the first ten minutes of the class, because if I allowed for bending of the rules once, I would probably be just as lax if they made the same plea on some later date.

Not a chance of that happening, though.

Another student asked if it was just a “practice” quiz so that they could tell what kind of questions I would be giving for next time.

Yes, I said it’s a practice quiz in that sense. But if he believed it means it’s not recorded, which is what he didn’t emphasize in his question and I didn’t volunteer, he’s mistaken.

Finally, one group, the only one to have two manuals (a second group only had a photocopy) asked for a bonus for their effort. That one, I agreed to, if only to give the people in that group that I knew to be industrious a break from not being able to get perfect in the quiz as well.

I taught one member per group how to read the two types of calipers we used for the activity, but next time, after one sample, I will just verify their real measurements by telling them if it is correct or wrong, but not giving them the correct answer, as they are asking to check each of their measurements.

Session 947 is not recorded. Class dismissed.
